Thunderbird crashes when opening and closing preferences only if sway is started from GDM

• Debug Log:
  This is not reproducible with sway being launched manually from the shell (with or without debug logging). The bug only appears if GDM is used to start sway.

• Configuration File:
  This works with the default configuration

• Stack Trace:
  None, also not for thunderbird

• Description:
  When starting sway via GDM, Thunderbird usually disappears once you open the preferences and close it again (maybe repeated once or twice). This does not happen if sway is launched manually from a terminal (with or without debug logging). There's no core dump available for Thunderbird in coredumpctl after it has disappeared. When launching Thunderbird from a terminal inside a GDM sway session, the following message is logged once it disappears:

  Gdk-Message: 10:04:34.211: Error reading events from display: Broken pipe

  I can't find any sway logs when sway is started from GDM. Is there any location where a log should be present in such a configuration?

Btw, I also see occasional crashes for Firefox and some other Java programs in this setting. But I haven't verified whether they are also free from crashes without GDM yet.

I've just switched to LightDM and this also happens there. Something must be different between a session started via a login manager and a session started from the console.

Do you have a high polling rate mouse?

This might be a case of https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland/-/issues/159 ; that is, Sway sends Thunderbird a large number of messages (e.g. the wl_pointer.motion, wl_pointer.frame messsages at the end of the WAYLAND_DEBUG log); then Thunderbird does not handle them quickly enough, and Sway fills the buffers for the outgoing connection, and closes the connection. Thunderbird then tries to read from the closed connection, prints Gdk-Message: 17:22:08.992: Lost connection to Wayland compositor., and exits cleanly.

If my guess is correct, then expanding the default socket send buffer size by a factor of 100, i.e. sudo sysctl net.core.wmem_default=21299200, sudo sysctl net.core.wmem_max=21299200 might be a workaround?

To know why the compositor disconnects the client, Sway debug logs would be welcome.

You should be able to just edit /usr/share/wayland-sessions/sway.desktop and set the command to sh -c "sway -d >/tmp/sway.log 2>&1".

Sorry for the delay. I just tried to reproduce this with debug logging switched on but the issue doesn't appear in this setting. There's a noticeable delay when closing the preferences in thunderbird, but nothing crashes now. :/ Sounds like a good old race condition...

My mouse is a Logitech G502.

Looks like this does the trick. There's still the strange delay such as in the debug log configuration when closing the settings but nothing crashes. In the debug logs I can also find a few of these lines:
