There is a opportunity to wrap this API in a DHT style architecture in order to offer additional properties. I think (but I don't think others agree) that this could be done without losing any features.
Some of the problems that this would solve is:
- Better hiding who is searching who and for what (i.e. offering anonymity and confidentiality properties)
- Decentralised management of data providers (i.e. allowing voluntary contribution of data without a central authorisation, through discoverability)
Some of the things this might offer for free is:
- Piggy backing on the file sharing mechanism (Bittorrent or other DHT based systems)
- Access control (private tracker or authorisation or authentication on the server side)
- Anonymised PubSub
- Instant Messaging
It should be possible to:
- Build on top of https://github.com/irungentoo/toxcore or https://github.com/ntoll/drogulus
- Run DHT proxies for servers who don't want to implement it
Please let me know if in fact this would remove functionalities to Who's Got Dirt?
Would you support (and switch) to such an implementation if it was developed or are there reasons not to adopt it?
